too-many-tabsDuring this time of year, I find it hard to concentrate and focus.  Too many things pull at my thoughts, attention and time. So when I sat down to write this blog post, what came to mind was… movies. Recently two of my favorite underrated Disney movies were shown on cable and I was talking about a third.  This made me think about how fun it would be to share these with you and find out which ones you love as well.

By underrated I mean those Disney movies that didn’t get big marketing pushes the way Moana, Frozen, and Maleficent did. These movies got little time in the theater and most of us found them on cable… accidentally.

meet-the-robinsonsThe first, and only animated movie, is Meet The Robinsons.  Based (very) loosely on the William Joyce book A Day With Wilbur Robinson this movie shows the power of imagination, the joys and insanity of family and our hopes for a better future for ourselves and those we love.  There are two time machines, singing frogs, clothes worn backwards, caffeine patches (you can stay up for hours with no side effects. AAHHH!), dangerous bowler hats, and a device to make the perfect peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. And much more.  It’s fun, fantastical and at its heart is family and the need to “keep moving forward.”

My favorite line? From our villain: “Let’s see, take responsibility for my own life or blame you?  Ding ding ding.  Blame you wins every time.”

The second rarely seen movie is Sydney White an updated retelling of Snow White set sydney-whiteat college, complete with seven dwarves (dorks), a prince, a witch and a poison apple.  There is no message in particular, other than the fact that we’re all outsiders and dorky in some way shape or form, but it is great fun and the performances are wonderful.

My favorite line? The dorks are walking in past our villain, Rachel Witchburn, and one waves to her and says, “Hi, ‘ho’.”  It’s perfect.

sky-highFinally, my family first saw Sky High more than ten years ago and it was love at first watch.  To this day there is a framed outline of my oldest son’s handprint on black paper outside his door so that he could “scan” it and enter his secret fortress.  It’s the story of the children of superheroes and their sidekicks going to high school.  Our main character is the son of two superheroes and everyone expects great things from him.  Unfortunately – he has no powers at all. During power placement he’s put in the sidekick track. Well, they call it hero support. Of course, the time comes when his powers do arrive and then he must learn how to use them and learn who his friends really are.

Favorite line one: “If things were suddenly to get fair, I doubt it would happen during high school”

Favorite line two (final line of the movie) “So in the end, my girlfriend became my arch enemy, my arch enemy became my best friend, and my best friend became my girlfriend. But hey, that’s high school.”sky-high-end

Bonus: Linda Carter plays Principal Powers. Once the bad guys are captured she says, “What a waste.  I can’t do anything else for you. I’m not Wonder Woman you know.”

Have you seen these?  Which ones do you like? I’m always on the lookout for new favorites.
